In Ireland, speeding is rather respected, and penalties can be heavy. That’s why we advise you to be careful, and avoid the temptation to step on the gas… Just to be aware of the main regulatory trends, here is our little recap…
Before you start, remember that traffic rules are different in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. In the south, they are referred to as kilometres per hour, while in the north they are referred to as miles per hour.
In both cases you drive on the left, and traffic controls may occur in busy areas.
As for speed, here is a general point on the rules in force:
Republic of Ireland | Northern Ireland | |
---|---|---|
In the city | 50km/h | 30 miles/h (48km/h) |
National road | between 80 and 100km/h | 60 miles/h (95km/h) |
Highway | 120km/h | 70miles/h (110km/h) |
