Tullynally Castle (also known as Pakenham Hall Castle) is a magnificent 17th century fortified castle, located less than 2km from the village of Castlepollard. Built in pure Georgian style, the castle is worthy of a fairy tale, with its multiple turrets, and its 2-hectare wooded garden!
Before the construction of the castle, there was a square fortified tower of medieval origin. It was used to house the garrisons of the region and to keep watch over the surroundings. It was in use until the 17th century, when it was finally destroyed to make way for a larger castle belonging to the Pakenham family. More than a dozen generations of this family then succeeded one another in the castle, whether squires, barons, and counts. Each generation has left its own mark on the castle, bequeathing their furniture, paintings and other stone monuments to their successors.
Nowadays, the castle is open to visitors. Its owner, Thomas Pakenham, welcomes the public with open arms to share his family’s heritage.
Tullynally castle is accessible to visitors on condition that they are part of a group of at least 20 people, and that they book their visit in advance. The visit then gives you access to some of the 120 rooms present in the castle, through a maze of stairs, towers and turrets… You will discover the main living rooms of the fortress, starting with the large kitchen, the living room, the dining room, or even some bedrooms. Don’t miss Tullynally’s sublime library, which contains several thousand rare books, some dating back to the 17th century.
Finally, if you love nature, don’t miss the 2 hectares of the castle’s garden. The latter has been specially laid out as an adventure course for children and sports enthusiasts. But the area is also perfect for a nice walk along its lakes and forests. A rather nice and playful place, which will delight young and old alike!
