The Skellig Experience is an interpretive museum, which will give you an overview of the Skellig Wild Islands which are located off the coast of County Kerry. After a friendly exhibition you will be taken on a shuttle bus to the islands themselves. Here you will learn about the daily life of the monks who lived in stone huts there until the 13th century when Skellig Michael (one of the two islands) was abandoned.
It must be said that the island is rather inhospitable and hostile, and has put the daily life of these monks to the test!
You will also learn about the archipelago’s lighthouse, between 1820 and 1960. There is also a historical passage, where 9 Americans perished in a crash on the Skellig Islands in January 1947, aboard a plane named “Liberator” .
Finally, you will discover how magnificent the fauna and flora of the islands are! They are of a rare diversity, and the population of birds, exceptional!
