A stone’s throw from the Guinness Storehouse is the Pearse Lyons Distillery, a distillery of Irish whiskey and gin located in… a church! The rather unusual location is home to a picturesque and authentic Irish distillery, passionate about the art of distillation and the creation of renowned spirits. Open to the public for guided tours, you will discover more than 800 years of Dublin’s history!
The distillery is located in the heart of St James Street, a historical area of Dublin where the history of Guinness beer started.
The Pearse Lyons Distillery is located in a church which it has taken care to renovate completely. It is there that guided tours are held where you can admire the stills and other vats in action!
The Pearse Lyons distillery has been founded by a couple Pearse and Deirdre Lyons in the years 1960-1970. Pearse Lyons (1944-208) was a great spirit lover, and was the descendant of five generations of coopers who provided casks for many Dublin distilleries.
Holder of a PhD in yeast fermentation, he was the first Irish to receive an official diploma in Brewing and Distillation from the very famous “British School of Malting and Brewing”.
At university, he even did an internship at the Guinness and Harp Lager breweries and then worked as a biochemist for Irish Distillers.
In short, a big name, who decided to found his own distillery under his own name.
Since then, the establishment produces high quality whiskey, as well as gin, which is very popular in Dublin.
The distillery offers exceptional visits of the premises: on the program, a guided tour in the church, discovery of the history of whiskey and gin, their manufacturing process, the history of Dublin, its Viking origins until today… etc… A tasting will also be offered to close the moment.
The guides are friendly, experienced and well versed in their subjects. A must try!
