The Muckish Cairn is an archaeological vestige dating from the Neolithic period. Built at the top of Muckish Mountain, in the county of Donegal, it is part of the rewards for any hiker who has climbed the mountain!

A prehistoric construction

The Muckish Cairn is a pile of stone erected in Neolithic times. Today it lies north of the top of Muckish Mountain and is a mound of white stone.

Very imposing, it would have served as a prehistoric tomb and ceremonies in Celtic times.

Researchers believe that this stony mound was used by men to climb closer to the sky. A way to better pay tribute to their beliefs…
