Lough Ouler is a lake located in the Wicklow Mountains National Park in Ireland. Magnificent, it has the particularity to have a shape … of heart! A unique and original shape, which attracts every year thousands of hikers, who come to admire its wild environment. You too want to explore it? Here’s a short guide on how to get there!

Visit Lough Ouler

A wild lake, only accessible on foot!

We might as well tell you: Lough Ouler is still a rather unknown spot for tourists. But there is a good chance that it will become a very popular attraction in the years to come! Might as well take advantage of it now, to avoid the world!

Before tackling it, you should know that Lough Ouler is located precisely at the foot of the Tonelagee mountain (Tóin le Gaoith). It is the 3rd highest mountain in the National Park, and the 33rd highest in Ireland.

The lake, can therefore be admired from the top of this mountain. But beware: there are no trails to guide you, and the mountain has the reputation of being particularly exposed to winds. You will therefore need to be enduring, have a good level of hiking, and be able to cope with steep slopes.

For a good walker, the round trip can be done in about 3 hours.

Where to start?

The hike can start after you have parked in a special parking lot on the side of the Glenmacnass waterfall. It is free of charge and is located on the R115 (the Old Military Road). Don’t worry: the parking lot is safe and allows you to start the ascent in a rather direct way.

Before leaving, remember to bring hiking boots, a backpack with water, sandwiches, a windbreaker, and a warm sweater.

You will then only have to progress at your own pace: cross the river, then walk along the edge of the woods, attacking the ascent of the mountain. Continue straight ahead and then take an extremely muddy ground: a small path will then lead you to the highest point. The lake should then be on your right.

The landscape is striking, in contrast to the heather, the greenery and the deep waters of the lake. You will then dominate the mountains of the National Park: a real marvel for the eyes, which will give you the impression of being alone in the World, in the middle of the wild nature. A real great moment, perfect to reconnect with nature, and admire this heart-shaped lake!
