The Kilmogue Dolmen (translated as “Warrior’s Stone” in French), is an impressive dolmen located north of Waterford in County Kilkenny. In perfect condition, it is one of the largest dolmens in Ireland!
The Kilmogue Dolmen (also called Harristown Dolmen) has a rather impressive wingspan: 3.7 metres high, it is almost 4 metres long with its cover slab. The layout of each megalith is quite exceptional: the main table is at 45 degrees, and rests on 2 side megaliths, as well as on a smaller back stone, enhanced by small stones.
The whole seems fragile, but the dolmen has been able to resist several centuries: do not trust its structure, the site is solid!
The entrance of the dolmen is located in the north-east, and opens on 3 meters high. According to the researchers, the dolmen was in fact a tomb, where ancient bodies burned in the Neolithic period were buried. The site is remarkable and rather quiet, with its surrounding fields. A must see if you are passing through the county of Kilkenny! Probably one of the most beautiful dolmens in Ireland!
