It is not always easy to dive into the heart of a little-known local sport. It must be said that hurling is a typically Irish sport, which does not exist anywhere else in the world! That’s why the Kilkenny Way had the idea of offering a kind of introductory course to help you master the precepts of hurling! Icing on the cake: the activity is adapted to the whole family, and will allow you to experience this sport by yourself!
To discover it, go to the prestigious “Home of the Famous Kilkenny Cats”. This is the official HQ of the local Kilkenny hurling team (partially transformed into a museum), where you can start your discovery of this very special sport!
To start in the best conditions and lay the foundations, your instructors will invite you to discover a video to introduce you to the principle of Hurling, its history, its rules, and its current game modes. Very nice and playful, the video is a perfect introduction, and will teach you that hurling is a very old sport, played for more than 3000 years in Ireland, and that it is one of the fastest sports in the world!
Then comes a short presentation of the greatest hurling players in the country, and finally, a brief overview of the different techniques of the game, including :
After this short theoretical introduction, you will be invited to go to Nowlan Park, a stadium in the town of Killkenny where most of the local hurling matches are played. Accompanied by your coach, you will then have free time to try your hand at the different techniques of the game, and even start a match with the other participants! Laughter guaranteed! This activity is ideal if you travel in a group!
Finally, your guide will propose you to end your activity with a short visit to the Legend’s Hurling Bar, a kind of Irish Pub/museum entirely dedicated to the world of hurling! You will then be offered a good irish stew, a typically Irish speciality, to be enjoyed in front of a hurling match broadcast! A great way to end the day, while plunging into a typically Irish atmosphere and sharing a craic!
