Visit Innisfallen Island

A deserted and quiet island

The island of Innisfallen is a true haven of peace. Cut off from the world, it has many woods, where you will be able to meet some deer and other wild animals… Rest assured, they are wild and very fearful: you have nothing to fear… However, they bring a romantic and bucolic touch to the island, which has managed to remain a protected natural area!

Ideal for a short walk, Innisfallen Island will allow you to dive into the heart of an exceptional wilderness, to approach the shores of Lough Leane Lake, but also, to admire the magnificent ruins of Innisfallen Abbey. Founded in 640 by St. Finian, this now ruined monastery is said to have been one of the most important religious and cultural centres in the Kerry region. Occupied for 850 years, it was notably the place of education of the famous King of Ireland Brian Boru (while the abbey was held by under Maelsuthain O’Carroll). But the abbey was also the place where the “Annals of the Four Masters” were written, a famous manuscript relating the daily life of ancient Ireland…

However, the monks were expelled from the monastery on 18 August 1594 by Queen Elizabeth I, leaving it abandoned, subject to wear and tear and to the passage of time…

To get to the island, you should know that shuttles are organized during the summer from Ross Castle. Count less than 7€ per person for the round trip. Don’t hesitate to take a picnic on the island: the silence and beauty of the place is worth a little meal in the middle of nature! (Be careful not to leave anything behind).
