Granuaile’s Tower is a fortified tower built in 1429 on Achill Island on the Kildavnet side. Owned by the O’Malley Clan, the castle is known to have belonged to the famous pirate Grace O’Malley.
Granuaile Tower was built on a typical Anglo-Norman model, on the seafront, facing the mouth of Achill Sound. It allowed the Irish clan of the O’Malley to watch over the ocean, and thus ensure the protection of their territory.
This strategic location was an additional asset for Grace O’Malley, who ruled over the local waters.
12 meters high, Granuaile’s Tower is composed of 3 floors pierced with windows and loopholes. Well preserved, the tower can be admired: it is an architectural marvel, and its setting is magnificent, with the sea and the surrounding nature!
