Dunmore Cave is located just 10km from Kilkenny and is fully accessible. On the program, a succession of rooms and rocky cavities plunged in a darkness barely pierced by a few spots will allow you to admire the beauty of this 350 million year old geological formation!
The visit to Dunmore Cave begins at the Visitor Center, where there is an exhibition presenting the History of the cave, the origins of its geological formation, until its discovery by Man in the 8th century.
According to ancient writings, the cave was mentioned for the first time in the “Annals” where a massacre of Vikings took place in the cave around 928. A few Viking archaeological remains were even discovered many centuries later, proving this theory.
In addition to the exhibition presenting the History of the Dunmore Cave, the Visitor Center offers an exhibition that focuses on three other areas, namely:
The visit of the cave will allow you to immerse yourself in a rather exceptional universe, where a guide will be pleased to show you all the subtleties of the cave, starting with the gigantic calcite formations, present everywhere. Although photography within the cave is forbidden, you will not be left out when visiting the site: Dunmore Cave is one of the most beautiful caves in all of Ireland, and is the bearer of a fascinating history.
Allow about an hour for a visit. We recommend that you bring a sweater for the visit: it’s rather chilly downstairs!
