Dungarvan Castle - Audrius Janecka - cc

Dungarvan Castle is a small fortified castle dating from the 12th century. Equipped with an enclosure and a keep, Dungarvan Castle has an architecture quite out of the ordinary, very different from the castles that we cross in Ireland … A real architectural curiosity in short, to discover if you pass by the region!

Visit Dungarvan Castle

A Castle with an atypical architecture

Dungarvan Castle is a polygonal enclosure. Its architecture adopts the “shell keep” style, an unusual form in Ireland, often crossed in England, which forms an enclosure folded over the castle like a shell.

The Dungarvan Castle is of course open to visitors, and offers you the visit of its curtain wall, its ford tower, as well as its corner tower, dominating the surroundings. Don’t miss the two-storey 18th century military barracks, located in the middle of the curtain wall.

The latter was used for military operations at the time, and has now been renovated to house an exhibition presenting the history of the castle.

The visit is guided and only available in English. However, the visit remains rather interesting and original, due to the original structure of Dungarvan Castle. The exhibition will present you in a clear and concise way, the major milestones in the history of the castle. A short video is also on the program, for those who are reluctant to read exhibition posters!
