The Cahergal Stone Fort is an old stone fort, located near Caherciveen in County Kerry. It is believed to date from the 7th or 8th century, and is similar in shape to other Irish forts including the Staigue Stone Fort. A nice curiosity, which will take you back to the Irish Middle Ages!
The Cahergal Stone Fort is a medieval building, having been built to serve as a stronghold for the local kings of the time.
The fort measures 27 metres in diameter, and has imposing walls ranging from 2 to 4 metres high and 5 metres thick!
You will be able to reach the top of these walls thanks to the presence of 7 staircases. Don’t hesitate to take them: the view from the top is superb and dominates Caherciveen and the surrounding area!
Note that the fort was renovated in the 1990s: the walls were raised and the stairs were redesigned. This allowed to consolidate the construction, and to open it to the visit.
In the centre of the fort, there is also a courtyard, as well as a second circular construction of about 7 metres in diameter.
The purpose of this building is still unclear, but archaeologists continue to study the site and compare it to the Staigue Stone Fort, an almost identical circular fort, also located in County Kerry.
Don’t hesitate to take a tour: the visit is free and the site is remarkable!
