Bull Rock

Bull rock, Ireland - J.A. Ross

Bull Rock is a rocky island in the open sea off County Cork in Ireland. It is the neighbour of another more imposing island: Dursey Island. But beware, Bull Rock is an island like you’ve never seen before! It seems to have come straight out of a pirate movie, like “Pirates of the Caribbean”!

Visit Bull Rock

An island to be discovered by boat only… but worth the detour!

Bull Rock, its ruins and tunnel

Bull Rock, its ruins and tunnel

Lovers of unusual and mysterious landscapes, it is to you that we address ourselves! Bull Rock is one of those unforgettable places that capture the attention, without revealing itself completely … Indeed, Bull Rock offers an exceptional view from the boat: a rock, pierced by a natural tunnel in its center, which allows any boat to cross it from side to side! The Irish call this tunnel: “the Entrance to the Underworld”.

It must be said that the dimensions of the island are modest: 93 meters high for 228 meters long and 164 meters wide. The whole is surrounded by steep rocky cliffs that contribute to give it such an inhospitable look…

In addition to these mysterious airs, Bull Rock also has a lighthouse built in 1889, as well as some ruined houses (the island has been abandoned) overlooking the sea.

These dwellings are almost comparable to troglodytes: built on the rock, the edifice seems to be built on a steep slope, almost threatening to collapse directly into the sea.

The sight of the tunnel and this abandoned house immediately gives it an air worthy of an island in the Indian Ocean. It’s like being in a pirate movie, and the island looks like an epic cutthroat.

To reach this exceptional island, you will have to take the boat. Be careful, there’s no way to dock there. You’ll have to contact Dursey Boat Trips, a company specializing in the discovery of this island. They will propose you a 1h30 tour around the island, for the modest sum of 40€ per person.

Don’t hesitate to book in advance: it’s an attraction more and more in demand!
