The Black Abbey is a Dominican Catholic abbey located in the city of Kilkenny. Created in 1225 by William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke, the building is still in use today and can be visited by tourists . A magnificent place with great architecture!

History of Black Abbey

An abbey confiscated in the time of Elizabeth I

The Black Abbey is said to have been named after the Dominicans who were once known as “the black brothers” because of the black cloak they wore at the time. Built in 1225, the abbey has moved little architecturally speaking. It was not until the 15th century that Elizabeth I, a deeply Protestant queen, confiscated the abbey. On the death of the sovereign, the new King James I decided to turn it into a courthouse, driving the Dominicans from their homes.

From 1642 to 1649, the Black Abbey played an important role in hosting the government known as the Irish Catholic Confederation. This reception was a real act of insubordination in the eyes of the British, and Oliver Cromwell’s army besieged Kilkenny and the Abbey in March 1650, until their abdication, causing terrible loss of life.

It was not until 1816 that the abbey was restored as a Dominican priory. Since then, the abbey has been in operation again…

Visit the Black Abbey

An abbey in the centre of Kilkenny

The abbey can be visited, as long as you are discreet and avoid photos. You will be able to admire its imposing architecture, built in dark grey stones. Its nave, although busy, has a very busy Anglo-Norman style.

Do not miss the large stained glass window of the abbey, called “Rosary Window”: this is the largest stained glass window ever designed in Ireland! Composed of large vertical panels, it is said to have been made in 1892 by Mayers of Munich, and depicts the Mysteries of the Rosary. The play of light is incredible!
