Visit Ben Bulben Mountain

An ideal mountain for climbing

The Ben Bulben mountain is one of the most popular climbing areas. The south face in particular, is the most indicated to plant your crampons in the limestone rock, and the black shists of the mountain.

The slope is also less steep than the north side, considered very dangerous for any climbing approach. (Therefore prefer the south to the north for more security). Please note that the Ben Bulben Mountains is very exposed to the wind: it is often very cold, and good equipment is required.

Once you reach the top of the mountain, you will be fully rewarded with a magnificent view of County Sligo and its beaches, where the Atlantic Ocean is constantly carving the coast with great waves. Don’t forget to immortalize the moment with a few photos: it will be hard to miss them, as the view is breathtaking whatever the weather!

If you’re not too keen on climbing, you can still walk around the mountain, between valleys and beaches of Sligo. There is no lack of roads and paths, and you will only have to walk along the sandstone of your desires to discover beautiful wild landscapes!

For history, Sligo was one of the favourite places of the great poet and writer William Butler Yeats. A poem written by him and called “Under Ben Bulben” is a true apology of the beauty of this mountain, and the rest of the Sligo region.
