Historic remains, protected by UNESCO

The site is high up, overlooking the ocean and Little Skellig, a smaller neighbouring island.

You will have to take an impressive dry stone staircase built by the monks themselves to get there. (We hope you will be enduring: there are 618 steps, some of which are sometimes slippery and dangerous).

The monastic village of Skellig Michael includes about ten dry stone huts, as well as other remains, such as crosses marking graves, low walls, and other monastic ruins.

The place is magical and fascinating: it transports us out of time, and gives us a glimpse of the precarious living conditions of the monks of the time. Don’t hesitate to draw your camera: this place is of a rare intensity!
