Aughnanure castle was built in County Galway in the 15th century by the O’Flahertys, a family that ruled western Connaught from the 13th to the 16th century.

The castle stands on a rocky island in the Drimneen River, on the shores of Lake Corrib, where another castle, built in 1256 by the Normans, once stood. The castle is actually a 6-story tower, whose only access is a rock bridge, which leads to the entrance of the fort.

It was once fortified with a double wall and machicolations as a rampart and defense for the O’Flahertys clan. At that time, the chief of the clan lived on the 3rd floor and the 2nd, 4th, and 6th floors were assigned to other family members and servants. These defenses allowed them to withstand a siege by the British in 1572, when they finally surrendered and were captured by Edward Fitton.

A tower with typical Anglo-Norman architecture

Access to the castle costs 7€ per person (4€ for children) and allows you to explore the different floors of the fort, from the bedrooms to the banqueting rooms.

The 4th floor is distinguished from the other levels by a high stone vault.

The 5th floor has a gigantic hall that probably served as a reception area. A gigantic southern courtyard, now in ruins, was also a place where the clan entertained.
