Atlantic Drive on Achill Island – Randy Durrum – cc
Atlantic Drive starts at Achill Sound, taking the R319. You will pass through the villages of Polranny, Tonragee, Owenduff and Mulranny.
You will also be able to admire Bellacragher Bay, a beautiful bay with a fish farm.
If you continue, you will admire Polranny Hill (452m) and Curraun Hill (524m), 2 imposing mountains, invaded by a thick forest.
Then take the N59 towards the Currane Peninsula. This peninsula offers an incredible view of Clew Bay and its 300 or so islands… With a bit of luck, you will even be able to make out Croagh Patrick standing on the other side of the bay!
Then discover Granuaile’s Tower, a magnificent tower built in 1429, which belonged to the famous Irish pirate Grace O’Malley (also called Granuaile in Irish Gaelic).
Then follow a short drive along the coast to the village of Ashleam. Here you’ll see expanses of rhododendrons, green valleys and cliffs plunging steeply into the ocean. The view is magnificent!
The tour is completed when you return to Achill Sound. It’s about 50 miles to complete a full circle of the Atlantic Drive!
