The village of Allihies was for many years one of the main mining actors of the country. That’s why you will be able to discover one of the key attractions of the village: the Allihies Copper Mine Trail. This is a hiking trail, which will allow you to discover the former mining sites. Beautiful trails and breathtaking views are on the agenda!

Making the Allihies Copper Mine Trail

Vestiges implanted on the mountain

The attraction starts at the foot of the “Mountain Mine”, the mountain where one of the most important buildings of the mine is located. Unmistakable with its grey chimney, the building is accessible by taking a small marked trail. It is easy to walk along, but you will need good shoes to avoid slipping in the rubble.

The gradient rises somewhat, but will allow you to enjoy a breathtaking view of the village and the Atlantic Ocean upon arrival. It must be said that the place is magical and has a certain charm.

Don’t hesitate to discover the building: many walls have stood the test of time, and the chimney is still intact. Possibility to visit it from the inside: the place will give you a small glimpse of how Copper was extracted in the 19th century.

A walk to be completed by a visit to the Allihies Copper Mine Museum, a small museum entirely dedicated to the mining history of the village!
