Wicklow (Gaelic: Cill Mhantáin) is an Irish town of 10,000 inhabitants on the east coast of Ireland. Located 50km from Dublin, the town boasts a Viking stronghold dating back to 795, before falling to the Anglo-Normans. A tourist town par excellence, Wicklow is a welcoming and authentic place to discover.
Wicklow is the perfect place to base yourself, rent accommodation and explore the surrounding area. Not far from the Wicklow Mountains National Park, the town also boasts its own intramural attractions, such as the famous Black Castle built by Maurice FitzGerald, Sire of Lanstephan. The castle is located on the coast, south of the port. Also of note is the nearby Mount Wicklow, an important Christian pilgrimage site.
Finally, don’t miss a visit to the town’s historic former prison, Wicklow Gaol, now a museum. Here, you’ll discover the precarious living conditions in which prisoners were held at the time.
As for restaurants and Irish pubs, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to discovering local specialities. Worth a try!
