Smithfield is a district in central Dublin, located on the north bank of the River Liffey. Situated between the famous O’Connell Street and Phoenix Park, it’s a lively and dynamic neighborhood! Here you’ll find markets, a horse fair and plenty of street entertainment!

Visit Smithfield

Dublin’s gourmet district!

If you’re a gourmet, Smithfield is the place to go if you like local produce and want to discover new things in terms of gastronomy and culture!

The district is home to the Dublin City Fruit Vegetable and Flower Market, which is renowned for the quality of its produce!

Here, you can sample the very best of Irish produce, from cheeses and meats to home-grown vegetables! The market’s atmosphere is second to none, and the merchants don’t hesitate to liven up passers-by’ idle strolls!

The Smithfield Horse Fair

But Smithfield is more than just a food market. It’s also known for its traditional monthly Smithfield Horse Fair!

Held in Smithfield Plaza, the horse fair has been held here for over 400 years. It’s a tradition dear to the hearts of Dubliners, who take the opportunity to admire magnificent breeds of horse, whether Connemara or more specific crossbreeds.

Here, horses are sold and traded in a friendly, good-natured atmosphere.

A curious experience, to say the least, especially in the heart of Dublin city center!

The Old Jameson Distillery

Just off Smithfield Plaza is the Old Jameson Distillery and its chimney. Established in 1780, the distillery is no longer in operation, but still opens its doors to visitors curious about Irish whiskey distilling practices.

Now converted into a museum, it presents the history of the Jameson empire, the whiskey-making process and the triple distillation technique (a 100% Irish concept!).

The icing on the cake: you can climb to the top of the distillery’s chimney, which has been converted into an observation tower, offering an exceptional view of Dublin!
