History of Sligo

A town founded by St. Colmcille

The name “Sligo” comes from the Irish word “Sliabh-Ghaoi”, meaning “river mountain”.

The town is built on the River Garavogue, which divides into two: one branch flows into Lough Gill, the other into Sligo Bay.

The town is said to have been founded in the 5th century by St. Colmcille, a monk who became patron saint of Ireland. Over time, it became an important religious and commercial center.

The town was once home to Sligo Abbey, built in the 12th century by the O’Connor clan. The abbey is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Ireland’s most important medieval sites.
