Eyre Square is a park in downtown Galway. Also known as the John F. Kennedy Memorial Park, it’s located off Williams Street and is one of the liveliest spots in town… Mainly at weekends, and at lunchtime!
Eyre Square is a rectangular park, surrounded on 3 sides by major traffic arteries. The park is very popular with Galway locals. They appreciate its calm, wooded spaces, ideal for a picnic or a sports match with friends. But they also appreciate the weekly markets held to the north of the park. Here you’ll find top-quality local produce, and a friendly, good-natured atmosphere that’s second to none.
At the center of the park is a magnificent modern sculpture and fountain, entitled “Galway Hookers”. The work depicts traditional Galway boats, easily recognizable by their red sails and wooden hulls. It’s a pretty cool piece that pays tribute to centuries of tradition!
And don’t miss the 2 large cast-iron cannons in Eyre Square, as well as the sculpture of the American President by John F. Kennedy. A true tribute to the memory of Ireland’s heritage!
Despite its small size, the park is quite pleasant. Don’t hesitate to take a stroll: it’s a relaxing spot, perfect for a little nature break!
