County Derry (also known as Londonderry), is a beautiful region in Northern Ireland, renowned for its beautiful coastline and countryside. There are some rather nice archaeological sites in excellent state of conservation.
But the Derry region is also sadly famous for having a painful history, pitting two communities against each other: the Catholic Republicans and the Protestant Unionists, both of whom have been fighting each other since the second half of the 20th century. It is in this region, and more precisely in the city of Derry, that the terrible episode of Bloody Sunday (1972) took place.
