Served most often at Christmas in Ireland and in English-speaking countries in general, mince pies are small tarts made with a sweet filling of apples, oranges, red fruits and raisins. If this description makes your mouth water, then you should know that mince pies are a real treat, and that they are often made with a few variations of fruit … So here are some recipe ideas to make your own Mince Pies and treat young and old alike!

Mince Pies are traditionally served at Christmas in Ireland, and sprinkled with icing sugar. The latter generally use seasonal fruit, which, once reduced to a sweet filling, offers an incomparable flavour: the jams then just have to go and get dressed!

Irish people usually eat them at the end of a meal, or taste them with a hot drink and custard. Enough to make a meal in itself, to the delight of gourmets!

Mince Pies Recipe

Ingredients

  • Number of people: 8
  • Preparation time : 20mn
  • Cooking time : 15 mn
  • 500 g peeled apples
  • 250 g blueberries (or blackcurrant of your choice)
  • 350 g of raisins
  • 200 g sugar
  • 150 ml calvados
  • 1 pinch of cinnamon
  • 1 juice of 2 oranges
  • 1 zest of 2 oranges
  • 2 rolls of shortcrust pastry
  • Small moulds for making a series of tarts

Preparation of the Mince Pies

  • Let’s take care of the apples first. Before we start, the apples must be peeled, washed and finely cubed.
  • Place them in a large salad bowl and add all the ingredients listed above. Do not hesitate to stir the whole to obtain a homogeneous whole.
  • The next step is even simpler: cover the top of your bowl with cling film and leave the mixture to rest in the fridge for 24 hours.
  • The next day, prepare your tartlet moulds by buttering them and cover them with shortcrust pastry. All that’s left to do is to add the filling to your salad bowl, cover them with a little shortcrust pastry, put them in the oven for 15 minutes at thermostat 5 and that’s it!
  • Ideally, serve the Mince Pies sprinkled with icing sugar, with custard, tea or a large glass of milk!
