It is impossible to travel in Ireland and miss the famous fish and chips. A very popular irish meal, this legendary meal is totaly came from the irish culunary heritage. In addition to be so tasty, he is know to be a quick meal, familiar, universal and friendly. Above that, with his cheap price, it’s impossible to ruin yourself with a fish and chips, wich is a real plus.

Nothing is complicated in the fish and chips. It’s a speciality based on fresh fishes, wich is fishing the same day, roll in the breading, fried, served with homemade french fries and a piece of vegetables (it’s better to feel less guilty!).
Basically cooked with frying, it can also be light if it’s cooking by the rules of art.
Because a proper fish and chips is based on some essentials rules :

  • fresh fish
  • a good breading quality
  • and a good quality of potatoes

The fish have to be really fresh, without any edges, and have to be cook at the minute. We use generally whites fishes, appreciate for they very good flesh who is concerned with cooking. Her breading, as for her, have to be enveloping, light and crispy.

The dough fry have to be prepared the same day : this is a prerequisite to have a good fresh fish quality.

About french fries : say good bye to the industrial products, nothing is more better than real potatoes, fried on the spot.

For the vegetables accompaniment, it’s generally served with a coleslaw salad ( made with cabbages ) or a broken pea mash. They are here generally to give more flavor to the meal.

The fish and chips have many advantages in addition of his memorable taste. Very economic than the price of a traditional meal, a fish and chips will never coast more than 6£ by person, and you will be served copiously with the possibility to choose the fish that you want.

Most of the time, we will propose to you to choose between holibut, cod, haddock or ray. Of course, all the fishes proposed have to be fresh and came from a very good flawless quality. You can find the fish and chips most of the time inside a newspaper, a tray or a plate.It depends of your desire, or your daily activities, if you want to eat quickly or if you want to take your time to eat on a table ( the newspaper is a good idea if you are hurry : you can eat your fish and chips on your way).

It ´s also possible to embellish your meal with a dressing : most of the time, they propose vinegar, malt vinegar (wich is the craziest for irish people), ketchup, tartar sauce …
Note that on this days, there is a real infatuation for the fish and chips in Ireland.
Such a success that some restaurants and chains had specialized themselves in this meal and propose to serve only this one. You can find the same chains at several places in Ireland.

Fish and Chips recipe


For 4 persons

  • 4 fresh fillets of fishes
  • 5 potatoes
  • some colslaw
  • 2 lemons
  • some salad leaf
  • vinegar

For the breading :

  • 2 egg yolks
  • 10 oz of flour
  • a half of a glass of beer ( or sparkling water)
  • 6 oz of milk
  • salt
  • pepper


  • Peel the potatoes, then cut them into strips to give them the shape of fries.
  • Then fry them for 10 good minutes.
  • Mix the flour, sugar, egg yolks and milk, stir and slowly stir in the beer.
  • Add the egg whites and add them to the batter.
  • Add salt and pepper for seasoning.
  • Then roll your fish in the flour.
  • Cover them with batter.
  • Brown them in the oil (in the fryer or in the pan, as you like)
  • Once cooked, let them rest in plate on absorbent paper.
  • Put on each plate a fried fillet of fish, a portion of french fries, a little salad and colslaw.
  • You just have to taste it with with a good pint of irish dark beer!
  • Enjoy your meal!
