Life of Peter O’Toole

An Irish man with a passion for literature and theatre

Peter O’Toole was born in Connemara and spent his childhood in County Kerry and Dublin. Very quickly impassioned letters, he becomes journalist in Leeds in England for the Yorkshire News newspaper.

But in 1949, he decided to try his luck at the age of 17, to discover the theatre and the art of comedy.

At the age of 20, he was awarded a scholarship to the famous Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Fascinated by Shakespeare, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company at the age of 22 and performed more than 60 classics, such as Hamlet, Othello McBeth and Romeo and Juliet.

It was only in 1960 that he played his first film roles: “The Abduction” by David Balfour of Robert Stevenson, and “The Devil’s Teeth” by Nicholas Ray.

But the consecration did not come until 1962, with the film Lawrence of Arabia by Sam Spiegel and David Lean. He is then 30 years old, and enters the very closed club of the sacred monsters of the Hollywood cinema.

The same year, he played the role of Henry II, alongside Richard Burton and John Gielgud. Peter O’Toole then received the Golden Globe for best actor in a British film.

He then went on to make a string of Hollywood films, and was nominated 7 times for the Oscars, without however being awarded them. It is only in 2003, at the age of 71, that he was awarded this prize, in tribute to his flamboyant career.

He then multiplied small roles (including that of Pope Paul III in the series “The Tudors”) and published his autobiography before officially retiring from the cinema in 2012.

He finally died on December 14, 2013, after a long illness. Praised during his lifetime, he is nowadays one of the greatest Hollywood actors of the 20th century.
