The Galway Hooker is a traditional Irish fishing boat, mainly used on the Galway side. Easy to recognize, it is equipped with a single mast, and is composed of a main sail and 2 sails at the bow. These 3 sails are dark red, and the hull is black: impossible to miss!

The Galway Hooker was created around the 18th century, in the heart of the Bay of Galway. Costaud and maneuverable, it had the advantage of being adapted to fishing, as well as for the transport of materials. Thus, it was not rare to see at the time many Galway Hooker relaying Connemara and Galway to transport limestone blocks, agricultural equipment, or foodstuffs from fishing.

Nowadays, there is a real revival of interest in this boat. The Cruinniú na mbad festival even takes place every year, and it is possible to admire countless Galway Hookers, sailing across the Bay of Galway, from Connemara to Kinvara.

It should be noted that some ports in the bay even offer tourists the opportunity to embark on board these boats for the duration of a trip. A really nice experience, but often expensive!
